Explosion at Qatar’s Barzan Gas Facility Injures 54, 18 Missing

A significant explosion occurred at the Barzan gas facility in Doha, resulting in injuries to at least 54 individuals, while 18 others are reported missing. This information was released by Qatar’s Ministry of Interior.
The explosion was attributed to a “technical failure,” according to governmental sources, who assured that there is no immediate threat to the public. The facility is situated over 70 kilometers from the nearest residential areas, but residents reported experiencing a strong shockwave and vibrations in their windows.
Emergency services managed to bring the fire under control, and search and rescue operations are ongoing.
Ras Laffan is a critical component of Qatar’s energy infrastructure and serves as the primary center for the production and export of liquefied natural gas (LNG) by QatarEnergy, which has an annual capacity of approximately 77 million tons of LNG.
The facility also produces ethane, condensate, liquefied petroleum gas, and sulfur for both domestic and international markets.
This incident comes amidst heightened tensions in the region and follows recent attacks on Qatar’s energy infrastructure. In March, part of the complex sustained damage from a missile strike, affecting the country’s export capabilities.
Currently, authorities in Qatar and QatarEnergy are assessing the extent of the damages and the potential impact on LNG production.
