UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer Expected to Resign on Monday

According to reports from The Observer, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is anticipated to announce his resignation on Monday and outline a timeline for his departure. Despite this speculation, a government source stated that Starmer remains dedicated to fulfilling his governmental responsibilities, as noted by Reuters.

The pressure on Starmer’s position has escalated significantly, particularly after his rival, Andy Burnham, secured a parliamentary seat that could pave the way for a formal leadership challenge.

The Observer article mentions that Starmer was discussing his situation with his wife at their Chequers residence prior to making a final decision. However, senior figures within the Labour Party are expecting a clear statement regarding his future status by Monday.

Nonetheless, a government source reiterated that Starmer is focused on his tasks and referenced his previous comments on the matter.

On Friday, the Prime Minister expressed his intent to fight any challenges to his leadership and urged the Labour Party to avoid internal conflicts that could lead to disunity.

Starmer’s Popularity Plummets

Starmer, who led the centre-left Labour Party to a landslide electoral victory in 2024, has seen his popularity dwindle sharply amidst a series of scandals and abrupt policy changes. Many voters now perceive that he is unable to deliver the improvements in living standards that he had promised.

If he were to resign or be dismissed, this would mark the UK’s seventh Prime Minister in just over a decade—the highest turnover in leadership seen in nearly two centuries—reflecting widespread dissatisfaction with successive governments’ failures to enhance public services and address issues like illegal immigration.

More than 100 Labour MPs, around a quarter of the party’s total representation in the House of Commons, have publicly stated they want Starmer to resign or establish a timeline for his departure, according to a tally by Reuters.

The Observer article, which did not disclose its sources, noted that Starmer came to the conclusion that he could no longer maintain his position after discussions with cabinet ministers, advisors, donors, and union leaders.

Burnham Lurking in the Background

Burnham, a 56-year-old career politician, is viewed by many within the Labour Party as the most likely successor to Starmer—either through a negotiated power transfer or a formal leadership contest.

Having built a power base as Mayor of Manchester in northern England, Burnham easily dismissed the threat posed by Nigel Farage’s right-wing populist party, winning a vacant parliamentary seat on Friday.

While he has not yet formally challenged Starmer, he used his victory speech to promise a new direction for the country. Allies have urged Starmer to voluntarily step down and pass the reins of power.

Former Health Minister Wes Streeting has also indicated a willingness to challenge Starmer.

The Times reported on Saturday that Burnham would dismiss Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves if he became Prime Minister, following his advisors’ conclusion that she does not represent a sufficient change in direction. Reuters could not immediately verify this information.
