Manuel Akanji Praises Cristian Chivu’s Influence at Inter Milan

Manuel Akanji, the central defender who will celebrate his 31st birthday on the day of the 2026 World Cup final, has praised Cristian Chivu from the United States. “He understands players very well because he was a high-level footballer himself and has gone through the same situations we face. Moreover, he has won many trophies with Inter and knows exactly what the club needs,” said the Swiss international.

Akanji quickly adapted after being brought in on loan from Manchester City, and Inter decided early this year to transfer the Swiss stopper permanently.

With Inter winning the title, the purchase clause was automatically activated, leading the club to pay €15 million and increase his salary to €3.7 million net annually.

Akanji is also a key player for the Swiss national team, which currently has four points in the group after two matches (1-1 with Qatar and 4-1 against Bosnia-Herzegovina), putting them in a strong position to qualify for the knockout stages of the 2026 World Cup.

After his team defeated a former and future opponent of Romania, Manuel gave an interview where he spoke about Chivu.

Akanji: “I Had a Great Season and Appreciate Chivu for Wanting Me at Inter”

When asked by a journalist from Gazzetta dello Sport if he believes Chivu is as special as Guardiola at City, Akanji responded without hesitation: “First of all, I think he understands players very well because he himself was a top player and has experienced similar situations to what we are going through now.

Additionally, he has won many trophies with Inter and knows exactly what the club needs. He is also a very communicative and empathetic coach. He talks to us players often and, importantly, is willing to listen. This creates an excellent relationship with all of us.

Chivu is special and has made me a complete player. I am very satisfied with him; I had a great season and enjoy continuing together. I am grateful that he insisted I come to Inter. This is a university, a school where you can learn not just about football. I want to win more trophies with this club!” – Manuel Akanji, the Swiss defender for Inter
