Presenter Fired After Incorrectly Announcing Lionel Messi’s Father’s Death

Lionel Messi, 38, showcased his skills with a hat trick in Argentina’s 3-0 victory over Algeria, yet the match ended with an emotional moment for the captain. Speaking to reporters, Messi addressed the “difficult days” he has faced, revealing that his tears had nothing to do with the game. He did not elaborate on the reasons behind his emotions, which sparked speculation in Argentina, including a shocking rumor.
Messi Family Confirms Father is Recovering, Not Deceased
On Thursday, actress and presenter Florencia Pena, 51, mistakenly announced on the streaming platform Luzu TV during her show “El Show del Verano” that Messi’s father, Jorge, aged 68, had passed away. Shortly thereafter, the Messi family released an official statement denying the claim. They clarified, “The Messi family announces that Jorge is experiencing health issues. He is currently under medical observation, recovering with a positive progression regarding his health status.”
Consequences for Luzu TV: Pena and Staff Dismissed
Luzu TV responded swiftly. Peña and two producers involved in the show were fired following the incident. The channel issued a statement expressing deep regret over the live broadcast’s sensitive misinformation. They stated, “At Luzu TV, disseminating sensitive information without proper verification is unacceptable. Consequently, the management has decided to terminate the employment of all individuals involved, and Florencia Peña will step down from her role. We reaffirm our commitment to responsible, respectful, and conscientious reporting.”
Pena also took to her X account to express her remorse, stating, “I apologize to the Messi family for this terrible moment they are likely going through now. I am deeply ashamed for causing them this pain.”
