Diplomatic Crisis Escalates as Italy’s Foreign Minister Cancels US Visit

Tensions between the United States and Italy have intensified following remarks made by Donald Trump regarding Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Trump claimed Meloni had “begged” him for a photo at the G7 summit, stating he felt pity for her. Meloni responded sharply, leading to a united front of support from her political allies and opposition.
In light of the situation, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani announced the cancellation of his upcoming visit to the U.S. next week. Tajani expressed his disapproval on social media, stating, “The serious and offensive words of President Trump towards Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni offend all of Italy.”
“Italy Never Begs”
The conflict escalated after Trump’s comments at the G7 summit, which Meloni vehemently denied, calling his statements “completely fabricated.” She expressed her shock at Trump’s behavior toward allies, noting that it was not the first time he acted this way. Meloni emphasized that neither she nor Italy would “ever beg” for anything.
Declining Relations
This exchange marks a significant downturn in the relations between the two leaders, occurring shortly after signs of a rapprochement had emerged during their recent G7 interaction. Video footage showed them engaged in a deep conversation, yet Trump later suggested that he was merely accommodating her by speaking with her.
“She’s probably happy I spoke with her. I wasn’t obligated to talk to her,” Trump remarked, according to La7 TV.
Political Support for Meloni
Meloni’s allies have rallied around her in light of Trump’s comments. Defense Minister Guido Crosetto defended her, stating, “I cannot imagine Giorgia Meloni asking anyone for a photo, not even under threat,” and criticized Trump for damaging the U.S.-Italy alliance.
Giovanbattista Fazzolari, a close political ally of Meloni, attacked Trump, stating, “Whether intentional or due to incompetence, (Trump) is destroying the historical relations between the United States and Europe.” He argued that Trump’s inappropriate remarks have made the U.S. unpopular across the continent.
Opposition Condemns Trump
The opposition has also taken aim at Trump. Giuseppe Conte, leader of the Five Star Movement, labeled Trump’s comments as “completely unacceptable,” asserting that Italy does not deserve such public humiliation. Democratic Party Senator Filippo Sensi expressed solidarity with Meloni, condemning Trump’s “unqualified words.”
Lia Quartapelle, the foreign affairs spokesperson for the Democratic Party, remarked, “The shame belongs to him (Trump),” while supporting Meloni.
Shifting Alliances
Once a strong supporter of Trump and the only European leader to attend his 2025 inauguration, Meloni’s relationship with him seems to be deteriorating. Her recent distancing from U.S. policies, including suspending a military cooperation agreement with Israel and refusing U.S. use of a Sicilian base for operations in Iran, indicates a broader shift in her foreign policy.
The cooling relations were further exacerbated by Trump’s criticism of Pope Leo, which Meloni condemned as “unacceptable.” Trump later pointed fingers at Meloni, questioning her commitment to NATO and the nuclear threat posed by Iran.
A Calculated Political Move
Political analysts suggested that the rift with Trump could serve Meloni well, especially as her association with his administration was affecting her domestic popularity. Following a referendum defeat related to judiciary reforms, Meloni has sought to distance herself from Trump, viewing the recent incident as an opportunity to redefine her international stance.
As Meloni navigates this challenging political landscape, her efforts to distance herself from Trump may be seen as a strategic move aimed at preserving her political capital in Italy amidst the ongoing energy crisis linked to the conflict in the Middle East.
