Canada Sets Historic Record with 6-0 Victory Over Qatar

Canada delivered an outstanding performance against Qatar, winning decisively with a score of 6-0 in Group B of the World Cup. This remarkable victory marked the setting of a tough-to-beat record.
During the match in Vancouver, the Canadian national team, led by coach Jesse Marsch, recorded an astonishing 97 touches in the opponent’s penalty area. This achievement sets a new record for the most touches recorded in the penalty area during World Cup matches since statistics began in 1966.
Historic Milestone for Canada in World Cup History
The previous record was held by Germany, which had 71 touches in the opponent’s penalty area against Costa Rica in 2022, resulting in a 4-2 victory.
According to the statistics team at Opta, “Canada had 97 touches in the opponent’s penalty area against Qatar, 26 more than any other team in a match in World Cup history (since 1966 – Germany had 71 against Costa Rica in 2022). It is overwhelming.”
Other records achieved by Canada in the match against Qatar, as noted by Opta, include: “8 – The eight shots on target taken by Canada before halftime against Qatar were the highest number in the first half of a FIFA World Cup match since those recorded by Romania in 1994 against Argentina (also eight).”
“Canada is the first team outside of Europe and South America to score five or more goals in a World Cup match.”
“We wanted to play football that electrifies and excites the audience. I am sure that starting tomorrow, at least 40 million Canadians will claim they were at the stadium today! However, those 55,000 people in the stands were the real lucky ones to witness this. What a phenomenal performance from our team!” – Jesse Marsch, Canada head coach
