The Hunger Games Returns: New Prequel Set for November Release

2026 is shaping up to be an exciting year for science fiction fans as numerous beloved franchises prepare to launch new productions. Among these is the iconic science fiction series, which is set for a new release in just four months, according to reports from Screen Rant.
The lineup of science fiction films for 2026 is diverse, featuring original productions, adaptations from video games, and television series transformed into feature films. Three of the most significant franchises in the genre are making their way back to theaters this year.
The first to return was the Star Wars series, with its first film in seven years, titled The Mandalorian and Grogu. While the film starring Pedro Pascal did not meet box office expectations, it nevertheless marks an important step for the Star Wars universe.
In November and December, two more major franchises will return. The last major science fiction blockbuster of the year will be Dune: Part Three, directed by Denis Villeneuve, which sees the return of Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides, concluding the trilogy inspired by Frank Herbert’s universe.
The other production scheduled for November is a new adaptation of a popular young adult book series.
The Hunger Games Franchise Returns After Three Years
The upcoming film in this series is a prequel titled The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, set to premiere on November 20. This release will occur about a month before Dune: Part Three, giving the new installment from the Hunger Games universe a chance to dominate discussions in the sci-fi genre ahead of one of the year’s most anticipated films.
While it may seem that the series has remained active, the last film released was The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, which premiered on November 17, 2023. This production starred Rachel Zegler as Lucy Gray Baird and Tom Blyth as the young Coriolanus Snow.
Why the New Film Is Highly Anticipated
The latest entry in the Hunger Games franchise, which has grossed over $3.3 billion worldwide, tells the story of the bloodiest edition of the Hunger Games: the 50th competition, known as the Second Quarter Quell. The arena will feature 48 tributes, with the story centering around the young Haymitch Abernathy, a character portrayed by Woody Harrelson in the original films. The young version will be played by Joseph Zada.
In addition to exploring Haymitch’s backstory, the new film is expected to bring back characters Katniss and Peeta, played by Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson, respectively. For this reason, the production is considered one of the most anticipated sci-fi titles of the year, with expectations that it will continue the commercial success of the Hunger Games universe.
