13 countries participating in the 2026 World Cup have published a joint statement in reaction to recent statements by UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin (58).
The Slovenian official had suggested that the extension of the final tournament could lead to some “uninteresting” matches being played, claims that have raised the displeasure of several participants.
UEFA president's statements, condemned by 13 countries participating in the 2026 World Cup
Cape Verde, Curaçao, Uzbekistan, Democratic Republic of Congo, Haiti, Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, Egypt, Ghana, Senegal, South Africa and Ivory Coast expressed their “deep disappointment” with Ceferin's position.
“We respectfully but firmly reject these comments,” the joint statement begins.
The signatories emphasize that, for nations such as Cape Verde, Curaçao and Uzbekistan, qualifying for the World Championship represents a historic first and the fulfillment of a dream pursued by generations.
At the same time, for countries such as the Democratic Republic of Congo and Haiti, the return to the final tournament after a long absence has a special meaning for millions of supporters. The federations believe that the statements of the UEFA president minimize the efforts made to obtain the qualification.
“To suggest that these matches are somehow less important is deeply disappointing and ignores the efforts, sacrifices and aspirations of players, coaches, clubs, officials and fans around the world.
Behind every qualification are years of work and investment. Behind every national team are whole communities and millions of people who see football as a source of pride, hope and unity
Football does not belong to a select group of nations. Its strength comes from its universal character. The World Cup is the biggest competition on the planet precisely because it brings together different football cultures, histories and traditions
For many countries, attending a World Championship is not just a sporting achievement. It's a moment that inspires a generation, accelerates the development of football and creates memories that last a lifetime.
We reject the UEFA president's comments and reaffirm our belief that the development of football must continue to create opportunities, inspire new generations and reinforce the truly global nature of this sport. Each team qualified on merit. Every match counts”, the 13 national teams said.
