Chicken eggs, butter and frozen fish became the cheapest socially significant products in May. Chairman of the Association of Omnichannel Retail Companies Stanislav Bogdanov told RIA Novosti about this.

We are talking about “first price” goods, that is, the most affordable items in large retail chains. According to AKORT, the price of chicken eggs decreased the most over the month (-13.5% from the price in May 2025). Butter (-6.6%), frozen fish (-4.5%), rice and white cabbage also fell noticeably in price. In addition, compared to April, prices for broiler chicken carcass, buckwheat, black tea, milk, rye and rye-wheat bread, millet, lamb and sunflower oil decreased slightly.

Compared to May last year, the minimum prices for socially significant products in large chains have also generally become lower. Potatoes and beets fell in price especially noticeably. Prices for cabbage, onions, rice and pork also decreased. AKORT noted that retail chains continue to maintain a minimum markup on socially significant goods. In a number of categories, products were sold even below the purchase price. Among them are carrots, cabbage and apples.

According to Stanislav Bogdanov, chains are expanding direct purchases from suppliers, including through agricultural contracts and agricultural aggregators. This kind of work helps make the basic grocery basket more accessible to customers.
