Germany will try to avoid one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history against a team that is celebrating just having reached the tournament. The clash, between the four-time world champion and a debutant, offers the biggest difference in rankings between two teams facing each other in the first round of matches: 10th in the FIFA ranking vs 82nd.

Germany cannot afford missteps

Since being crowned world champions for the fourth time in 2014, Germany's players have failed to live up to expectations. With Curacao, on their debut at the World Cup, they have no excuse.

With Ivory Coast facing Ecuador in their other Group E match, it is important that Julian Nagelsmann's side start strongly. Otherwise, another early elimination could create pressure.

Germany arrive in Texas in excellent form, winning each of their last nine matches, ending their preparations with a 2-1 win over the USA.

On the other hand, Curacao approaches the match without any pressure. An emphatic 4-0 win against Aruba last weekend at least boosted the confidence of the debutants, an important win considering they were winless in their last four matches, a run of one draw and three defeats.

Germany and Curacao do not have a history of head-to-head clashes, with the two nations set to meet for the first time on Sunday evening.
