“Best harvest in recent years.” One of the largest fruit producers in the country is exulting over this year's cherries

The representatives of Domeniilor Otrov, one of the largest producers in the southeast of the country, expect a production above the average of recent years, against the background of favorable weather conditions.

According to the company's estimates, this year's production will exceed 500 tons of cherries, obtained from the 50 hectares of orchard cultivated with several varieties appreciated on the Romanian market.

“It is the best year of the last three years both in terms of production and quality. The weather conditions were favorable and the result can be seen in the uniformity of the fruit, in the commercial appearance and in the sizes we obtain this season,” said Velcia Onuț, engineer responsible for the Domeniile Ostrov orchards, according to a press release from the farm.

In the orchards of the Ostrov Estates, several cherry varieties are grown, including Van, Stella, Tragana, Regina and Kordia. The Van variety occupies about 10 hectares and is appreciated for its large fruits and high productivity, the company says.

According to the cited source, most of the cherries harvested this year have a caliber of 22-24 mm. Approximately 20% of the production falls into the 26-28 mm category, and about 10% of the fruits exceed the 28 mm caliber, a segment considered premium on the retail market.

The company specifies that the harvest is done exclusively by hand and involves around 140 people. On average, a picker harvests between 80 and 100 kilograms of cherries per day. Harvesting would end around July 5.
