Update on the day the World Cup starts: Argentina, the new leader of the FIFA rankings

On the debut day of the competition, FIFA published the new ranking of the national teams. The updated hierarchy foresees a change at the top: Argentina, until now the 3rd place, climbed to the first position after the results recorded in the last days, victories in friendly duels with Honduras (2-0) and Iceland (3-0).

The European champion, Spain, remained in 2nd place, and France, which in the previous ranking was the first team in the world, dropped to 3rd, pulled down by the failure against the Ivory Coast, 1-2.

England, Portugal, Brazil, Morocco, Holland, Belgium and Germany complete the global TOP 10.

Romania climbed to 54th place in the world

The new ranking comes with a new place for the Romanian national team, which climbed two positions, to the 54th place in the world, after the first two games of the mandate of the selector Gică Hagi.

Earlier this month, the Tricolors drew 1-1 in Georgia but went on to beat Wales 2-1.

The draw with Georgia (ranked 72nd in the world) slightly lowered the score of the “tricolors”, but the success with Wales, a superior representative on paper, ranked 37th in the world, came with precious points, which made Romania climb two positions.
