Spain defeated Peru 3-1, in a friendly played at the Cuauhtémoc stadium in Puebla (Mexico), the last before the start of the 2026 World Cup.
The Iberians had no emotion against Peru on Tuesday morning, confirming their status as favorites to win the world title. Oyarzabal opened the scoring quickly, in the 2nd minute, Pedri doubled it after half an hour from the first whistle (min. 32), and Gallese's own goal brought it to one “no show” (min. 53).
The players got bored of Spain's anthem: “It lasted longer than Peru lasted without conceding a goal”
Velez reduced the handicap (min. 66), but the South Americans were not capable of more, so that the moment of the national anthems raised the most discussions. Where the Mexican organizers put on the long version of the Spanish one, which bored Cubarsi, Ruiz, Rodri, Peri and the others terribly.
“Sidelong glances, a few slight smiles and even grimaces of surprise were the reactions of the Spanish players to the over two-minute version of the national anthem which was heard in Puebla” – reported this morning the daily Marca.
The supporters also reacted with disgust. “The Spanish national anthem lasted longer than Peru lasted without conceding a goal,” noted one fan. And another was amused: “Wow, Spain's national anthem took longer than it would take you to read the entire Mexico World Cup squad!”
Luis de la Fuente: “Supporters can rest easy”
After the final whistle, pleased with what he had seen on the field, the Spain coach did not stop praising. “I'm very happy. We played a good game and finished without injury. Everyone will be in top form. The fans can rest easy,” said Luis de la Fuente.
Moreover, the Spanish technician believes that, at the moment, “we have the best 6 midfielders in the world. Pedri is one of the best in the world, if not the best. The team needs Pedri as much as Pedri needs the team.”
