Folk calendar
Fedorin's day
On this day, the memory of the martyr Theodora, who suffered for her faith during the persecution of Christians under the emperor Diocletian in the city of Alexandria, in 303 or 304, is honored.
In Rus', Fedora (Theodora) was called “thorny on the tongue.” On this day, the peasants forbade women and girls to chat with each other, so as not to cause trouble. People were sure that gossip or a rumor started that day would go around the entire village, and all its residents would know what was going on in the family.
Moreover, on this day it was impossible to quarrel.
The huts were not swept that day either. It was believed that the brownie climbed under the broom, and a careless housewife could sweep it away along with the rubbish. And without a brownie, as you know, the house will not last long. People associated with trade especially tried to appease the brownie on this day. For the “owner” they placed a pot of porridge behind the stove and threw in a few coins in the hope that it would bring profit.
