Three highly complex surgical interventions, performed with customized 3D implants and tumor prostheses, confirm the level of expertise of the multidisciplinary team at the Pelican Medicover Oradea Hospital
Pelican Medicover Oradea Hospital has recently been a reference point for oncological orthopedic surgery in the region. Three highly complex surgical interventions were performed for patients with malignant bone tumors and benign-aggressive bone lesions, in the framework of an exchange of medical experience with national and international participation.
The interventions were coordinated by Dr. Adyb-Adrian Khalfrom the Orthopedics-Traumatology Department of Pelican Medicover Oradea Hospital.
The presence of specialists from Serbia and Bucharest confirms the recognition of the expertise developed in Oradea in oncological orthopedic surgery, in massive bone reconstructions and in the use of customized 3D printed implants. The Pelican Medicover Oradea Hospital thus becomes a regional benchmark for the treatment of complex oncological musculoskeletal pathologies.

The three interventions performed involved extensive tumor resections and advanced bone reconstructions: complex oncological reconstruction of the pelvis with a custom 3D printed implant, complex oncological reconstruction of the shoulder and scapula with a custom 3D printed implant and complex oncological reconstruction of the femur with a tumor prosthesis
All three cases involved patients with malignant or benign-aggressive bone tumor lesions and required rigorous planning, superspecialized expertise, and a multidisciplinary approach. With a duration of 7–9 hourse, each intervention meant tumor resection, protection of important vascular and nerve structures, bone reconstruction and soft tissue reconstruction.
Custom implants are designed based on preoperative imaging investigations so that tumor resection and reconstruction are tailored to each patient's anatomy.
“Currently, the goal of treatment is not only to save the patient's life, but also to restore a function as best as possible. In a context where many Romanian patients choose to seek treatment abroad, these interventions show that the necessary expertise for the management of complex orthopedic oncological cases also exists in Romania, in Oradea. Early referral to specialized centers, correct diagnosis and collaboration between specialties remain essential for improving the prognosis and the quality of life of these patients”, declared Dr. Adyb-Adrian Khal.
Bone sarcomas are rare tumors with an estimated incidence of approx one new case per 100,000 inhabitants per yearagain 40–45% of cases occur in patients under 18 years of age. Undiagnosed and not treated correctly, these pathologies can have a severe evolution.
These interventions strengthen the position of Pelican Medicover Oradea Hospital as a center of expertise in oncological and reconstructive orthopedic surgery in Romania.
