London does not deny itself, and the famous weather in the British metropolis upsets the plans of the organizers at Queen's. The match between Cristian and Zheng will start no earlier than 15:30.
In the inaugural round, Jaqueline will meet the Qinwen Zheng, reigning Olympic singles champion, 2024 Australian Open finalist and former world no.4. The Chinese is, however, in a very complicated period and, after being eliminated in the first round of Roland Garros, she has dropped out of the WTA top 100, reaching the 122nd position.
Zheng has been injured for a long time and returned this year at the Doha tournament, where she stopped in the round of 16. The 23-year-old athlete was eliminated in the 2nd round at Indian Wells, in the round of 16 in Miami, in the 3rd round in Madrid and Rome and in the 1st round at Roland Garros.
In Paris, the quarter-finalist from 2025 was defeated 6-4, 6-0 by Polish Maja Chwalinska (24 years old, 21 WTA), the “revelation” of this year's edition. Chwalinska started from the qualifiers and reached the final, where she lost to Mirra Andreeva.
Last year at Queen's, Zheng reached the semi-finals, at the time being the main favorite for the title. The Asian lost to Amanda Anisimova, score 2-6, 6-4, 4-6.
Jaqueline Cristian, prematurely eliminated from Roland Garros, after reaching the semifinals in Strasbourg
Jaqueline Cristian was also eliminated in the 1st round of Roland Garros, after a 3-set defeat against Kamilla Rakhimova: 3-6, 6-4, 4-6. The Romanian did not manage to quickly adapt to the conditions in the French capital, coming after a long journey to Strasbourg.
More precisely, Jaqueline reached the semifinals of the Strasbourg tournament, where she was defeated by Victoria Mboko (19 years old, 9 WTA), score 6-7 (3), 6-3, 2-6.
Cristian and Zheng have met 3 times, the score being 2-1 for the Chinese woman. Jaqueline prevailed in 2021 in Palermo, Qinwen got her revenge 3 years later at the same tournament and then beat her in Wuhan as well.
In the round of 16 at Queen's, the winner will meet either Katie Boulter (29, 71 WTA) or Leylah Fernandez (23, 23 WTA).
Sorana Cîrstea will play on Tuesday, June 9, and her opponent will be the Australian Maddison Inglis (28 years old, 141 WTA). If she wins, the Romanian will play in the “eights” with Emma Răducanu (23 years old, 42 WTA) or with Anna Blinkova (27 years old, 105 WTA).
