In a reaction on Facebook, the Romanian ambassador to the United States, Andrei Muraru, explains why he supports the US intervention in Venezuela, pointing out that “Romanians know too well what a state captured by a dictator looks like”.
“When a regime holds its people hostage through fear, hunger and repression, we are no longer talking about 'politics', but about the people's right to freedom. That is why I support the intervention of the United States in Venezuela: a legitimate support for the citizens who demand real elections, rights and dignity, against a tyrannical regime”, wrote the Romanian ambassador in a post on Facebook.
Andrei Muraru notes that “Romanians know too well what a state captured by a dictator looks like”.
“The Ceaușescu regime was illegitimate not only through falsified elections, but through violence, censorship and the systematic humiliation of the people. Venezuela deserves the same thing we wanted: the end of the dictatorship and the beginning of a normal life, in freedom,” he says.

Overnight, the US attacked Venezuela and captured and removed the autocratic President Nicolas Maduro from the country, in Washington's most direct intervention in Latin America since the invasion of Panama in 1989. “The United States has successfully conducted a large-scale military operation against Venezuela and its leader, President Nicolas Maduro, who was captured along with his wife,” President Donald Trump announced.
The operation came after the United States repeatedly accused Maduro of running a “narco-state” and of rigging the 2024 election. In an appearance on Fox News, Trump said Maduro had been captured by special forces and flown by helicopter to Iwo Jima, an amphibious assault ship in the Caribbean, from where he would be transferred to New York for indictment and trial.
