My garden is on the black list of wireworms: 2 tricks with soil – I’ll share a method, without chemicals

You can get rid of wireworms without any “chemistry” at all, if you act competently and regularly. If you regularly apply all agricultural practices, the pest will go away on its own, and the land on the site will become much more fertile.

The best way is to simply keep him out of the area.

The most reliable method of dealing with wireworms is to make it uncomfortable for him to live with you. Click beetle larvae simply love weeds (because they produce dense thickets), too dense plantings, as well as damp and acidic soil. All these conditions should be excluded if possible. And at the same time plant helper plants (first of all white mustard). The wireworm cannot stand her and avoids her.

Let's start with a deep dig

To drive wireworms out of beds and fields, you first need to do a good, deep digging. It is best to use a powerful walk-behind tractor or cultivator. You can even hire a person who does this kind of work so as not to buy expensive equipment. During digging or immediately after it, all larvae found must be collected by hand and destroyed.

Deoxidize the soil and sow mustard

The next step is to reduce the acidity of the soil. Fluff, ordinary ash, chalk, lime and other deoxidizing agents are excellent for this. And after the soil becomes less acidic, it’s the turn of white mustard. All these techniques are good both in spring and autumn. But if you sow mustard in the fall, make sure that it has time to grow properly before sharp frosts hit.

While the mustard is growing, we clean up the area

While the mustard is gaining green mass, you will have time to thoroughly clean up the area: sort out piles of plant debris and mow out the weeds. If you strictly follow this scheme, you will definitely notice that there is noticeably less wireworm.

“But again, it’s not enough to do all this once. Weeds must always be monitored, and it is also undesirable to allow thickening of cultural plantings during the season. You can apply deoxidizers once a season, but you will have to dig deep both at the beginning of the season and at its end,” the author of the blog “Favorite Dacha. Garden and Vegetable Garden” (12+) shares his experience.
