Folk calendar
Ivan – Honeydew
On this day, the Orthodox Church celebrates the third discovery of the head of John the Baptist, or John the Baptist.
In Rus', it was believed that from this day on, “honeydew” appeared on plants – the sweet secretions of aphids and worms that feed on plant juices. They said about them: “Honey dew knows rust, spreads sweetly and eats away painfully.” It was believed that such “dew” caused harm to children, livestock, and plants.
At the same time, heavy dew on this day – real, not “honey” – foreshadowed a good harvest. “Grass doesn’t grow without dew,” that’s what they said about this. They also paid attention to other signs. If there were a lot of flowers on the rowan tree that day, they expected an oat harvest, but the late flowering of the rowan tree promised a long autumn.
