“Chat is dead.” OpenAI is preparing the most radical transformation of ChatGPT yet

OpenAI is planning the most extensive overhaul of ChatGPT to date, with the aim of turning it into a “super-app” equipped with programming tools and AI agents to boost its revenue ahead of a possible stock market listing, the Financial Times and Reuters reported on Sunday.
The changes are part of a wider reorganization at OpenAI, with the company refocusing its resources on profitable corporate clients and stepping up competition with rival Anthropic, several former and current employees told the FT.
“Chat is dead,” said a senior OpenAI employee.
The reorganization will give greater prominence and resources to OpenAI's programming product, Codex, and is set to roll out in the coming weeks, initially appearing in the form of updates to ChatGPT's website and mobile apps.
To drive adoption, OpenAI is redesigning the ChatGPT interface with new prompts and features that direct users to programming tools, image generation, and partner services like Canva and Booking.com.
The majority of Codex users are paying customers, while 2 million firms account for about 40 percent of OpenAI's revenue, the FT wrote, adding that the company expects that share to rise to 50 percent by the end of the year.
ChatGPT serves more than 900 million weekly active users, OpenAI announced earlier this year, adding that it has surpassed 50 million consumer subscribers.
Reuters reported in May that OpenAI was preparing to file a confidential IPO in the United States in the coming weeks.
However, Chief Executive Sam Altman said the firm is not focused on a specific time and will go public when the time is right.
