Ukraine itself appealed to the EU with a request to deprive the men of temporary protection. Who will this affect?

Ukraine has asked for changes to the European Union's Temporary Protection Directive (TPD) for Ukrainians abroad, which could limit it to men of military age. This was announced by European Commissioner for Home Affairs and Migration Magnus Brunner, Deutsche Welle wrote on June 4.

The initiative was discussed the day before at a meeting of the EU Council on Justice and Home Affairs. According to Brunner, the exclusion of men of military age from 23 to 60 years of age from the DVZ is “what the Ukrainians are asking for.”

The European Commissioner added that during the discussion the participants “attentively listened to ministers from the states” that received the most Ukrainian refugees – the Czech Republic, the Baltic countries, Poland, Germany, Austria.

He promised that “in the coming weeks” the European Commission will present a proposal on “what the future path will be in relation to temporary protection” for Ukrainians. The position of the European Commission must be approved by EU member states by a qualified majority, DW adds.

Deputy Minister for Migration of Cyprus, the country holding the EU presidency, Nicholas Ioannides added that today all EU member states agree that temporary protection for Ukrainians should be extended until March 2028. However, he said, “many countries” are in favor of “changes in the coverage of protection under certain conditions.”
