Day off Friday, June 5, 2026, for students and teachers. Which educational institutions are closing

Students and teachers have the day off on Friday, June 5, 2026, Teacher's Day, with all state schools and kindergartens closed. This is the second mini-vacation this week, after the one on June 1.

Friday off is granted according to the collective labor agreement at the education level, according to edupedu.ro.

Teacher's Day is celebrated every year on June 5. This day was established by Law no. 289/2007 and represents the date of birth of Gheorghe Lazăr, the founder of modern Romanian education.

According to the official calendar, the first to finish the school year are the twelfth grade students. They were supposed to finish school on June 5th, but since it's a day off, their last day of classes is Thursday, June 4th.

8th grade students finish their classes on June 12. For the rest of the students, module 5 runs until Friday 19 June 2026. The 2026 summer holiday starts on Saturday 20 June 2026 and ends on Sunday 6 September 2026.

For the first time at the national level, students and teachers had a day off on June 5, 2024. The measure was established by the collective labor agreement at the sector level – Education, entered into force on July 6, 2023, which ended the general strike in education.

Until the year 2024, no classes were held on June 5, but specific activities, other than teaching, were carried out in schools.

Contacted by Edupedu.ro, union leader Marius Nistor, from the “Spiru Haret” Federation of Education Unions, stated that establishing June 5 as a day off “is the only way to mark this day”.
