Folk calendar
Venison Day
On this day, the memory of Saint Helena, who lived in the 3rd and 4th centuries, is honored. She was the mother of the Roman Emperor Constantine I and became famous for her work in spreading Christianity.
In Rus', on this day they began to sow flax and performed special rituals for its good harvest. The old women collected a pair of baked chicken eggs from each woman in the village and put them in a bag of seeds. A man, having gone to the field to sow flax, first of all started to eat breakfast and brought home only shells. According to another custom, the sower had to throw the baked eggs as high as possible – for the high growth of the flax.
On the same day they paid a lot of attention to cucumbers, saying: “For Olena (Elena) – flax, for Konstantin – cucumbers.” The housewife, taking an old bast shoe, dragged it to the garden, threw it on the garden bed and said: “How thickly this bast shoe was woven, so that my cucumbers were woven thickly.”
But what should not have been woven on Olena is a braid. On this day, girls had to go bare-haired so that their hair would be beautiful and long.
Noticed signs of the weather. If the day on Olena was rainy, then a stormy autumn was expected. If it rained with hail, it foreshadowed snow and pellets on December 3rd.
