Dr. Andreea Brașoveanu: “Children are not born afraid of the dentist, they learn it.” Solutions that help the child enjoy going to the dentist

Children's fear of the dentist is, most of the time, “planted” by their parents, through their own experiences or through wrong approaches, even if unintentional. When children only go to the dentist when they have cavities or need extractions, it will be more difficult for the doctor to build a positive experience. But if parents take care to bring their children from an early age, not necessarily for treatment, but to familiarize themselves with visits to the office, there is every chance that fear will be excluded, the teeth will be better taken care of and the treatments will be easier to bear. Dr. Andreea Brașoveanu, pediatric dentist at DENT ESTET 4 KIDS, explains, step by step, the strategy by which the dental office can be transformed from a space of fear, into a place of trust, for both parents and children.

“If the first experience is positive, the office remains a safe place”

“Many parents are amazed when I tell them: the first visit to the dentist should be before the little one has all the milk teeth. Ideally, it would be around the age of 1 year or at most 6 months after the appearance of the first tooth”, recommends Dr. Andreea Brașoveanu.

At this age, the specialist explains, we are not talking about treatments: “We are talking about familiarization. The child discovers the office as a friendly environment, with colored lights, funny mirrors and a chair that “floats”. This first impression matters enormously, because, at this age, the child's brain works on the basis of emotional associations: if the first experience is positive, the office remains a safe place.”
