Cristian Pomohaci, detained by the authorities for 24 hours. The allegations in the file

The singer Cristian Pomohaci, a former priest, was detained by the authorities on Wednesday evening, for 24 hours, in a criminal case with accusations of crimes against sexual freedom and integrity, Agerpres reported.

The announcement was made by the Mureș County Police Inspectorate (IPJ) and comes following searches of two of his homes in Târgu Mureș.

“Following the activities carried out and the evidence administered in the case, during this evening, a 57-year-old man was detained for 24 hours, being placed in the Mureș Detention and Preventive Arrest Center,” said IPJ Mureș.

Sources from the investigation told Agerpres that the searches took place in a file in which alleged facts that took place starting in 2022, involving minors, are being investigated.

Cristian Pomohaci was also targeted by such accusations, but that file was closed.

“Pomohaci continue to illegally wear the priest's uniform”

He was excommunicated in 2017, after a scandal in which he was accused of recruiting minors for sexual purposes, and in the Orthodox Archdiocese of Alba Iulia, in a circular from May 2026, he drew attention to “the numerous notifications received at the eparchial Center, through which several people complain about the experience they had with the former priest Cristian Pomohaci”.

“We reiterate Circular no. 3802/20.10.2022, by which we inform all the sons and daughters of our Diocese in Alba and Mureș counties, that the aforementioned was dismissed from clerical service by the Decision of the Metropolitan Consistory with no. 4/06.10.2017. We also remind that the local in Ernei commune, Mureș county, on which he turned into a church and monastery, where he, as well as other pseudo-priests and so-called nuns, officiate services according to the Orthodox rite, does not belong to the Romanian Orthodox Church,” the circular read.

The archdiocese said that “Pomohaci continues to illegally wear priestly uniform and priestly vestments, misleading many people and even daring to appear dressed as a priest when on a trip to the Holy Land.”

“As a result of this worrying situation in which many families suffer and fall apart and many souls are lost, we urge all the faithful not to visit that place that does not have the blessing of the Romanian Orthodox Church and not to ask Mr. Cristian Pomohaci for so-called 'services' or 'releases', nor to contribute financially to the various 'collections' that are made there”, the circular issued in May 2026 also wrote.

In the same document, the institution also specified that it no longer has canonical authority over Cristian Pomohaci, because he is no longer a priest, and several approaches have been made to the state authorities to apply the necessary legal measures.
