Another huge surprise at Roland Garros: The player from the qualifiers is just one step away from the grand final

Polish tennis player Maja Chwalinska, ranked 114th in the world and coming from the qualifiers, won her eighth consecutive victory at the Grand Slam tournament at Roland Garros on Wednesday, qualifying for the semifinals of the French Open, after an unexpected victory over Russian Anna Kalinskaia (ranked 24th WTA), writes AFP.
The Pole defeated Kalinskaia in straight sets, 7-6 (7/3), 6-2.
The 24-year-old player, who had eliminated Diane Parry (92nd place), the last Frenchwoman left in the race, in the round of 16, is only the second player from the qualifiers to reach the semifinals of the Roland Garros tournament, six years after the Argentinian Nadia Podoroska, according to Agerpres.
Maja Chwalinska will face, for a place in the final, Diana Šnaider (23rd place), who passed the world number 1, the Belarusian Arina Sabalenka.
Born in Dabrowa Gornicza in southern Poland, Maja Chwalinska is in just her third Grand Slam main draw, following losses in the second round at Wimbledon in 2022 and the first round at the Australian Open in 2025.
Already assured of breaking into the top 100 thanks to her run in Paris, her semi-final qualification projects her to around 30th in the next WTA rankings, which will be released on Monday.
