Massive Russian attacks hit Ukraine overnight, killing at least five people.

Five people were killed and dozens injured in Ukraine after Russia launched a heavy attack overnight.

Four people were killed in Dnipro and 16 were injured. One person was also killed in Kiev, while at least 20 were injured in Russian attacks in the early hours of Tuesday.

Thousands of people took shelter in Kiev as large clouds of smoke rose from the city centre. Air raid warnings were in effect across most of Ukraine.

The mayor of Kyiv, Vitali Klitschko, urged people to stay in shelters. The head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, Tymur Tkachenko, said: “The enemy is attacking with ballistic missiles.”

Klitschko said two high-rise apartment buildings had been hit and there were fears people were trapped under the rubble.

As Russian strikes pounded Kiev in the early hours of the morning, the hum of drones could be heard amid more than a dozen loud explosions as the strikes made their impact felt.

Power outages and fires have also been reported across the city, and the extent of the damage is still unclear.

An industrial facility was also attacked in Zaporizhia.

The attacks come after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Monday reiterated warnings of a possible massive Russian attack and urged residents to pay close attention to air raid alerts.

“The warnings of the secret services about Russian attacks remain in place. A massive attack is possible, they have prepared one,” Zelenskiy said in his evening video speech.

Last week, Russia said it would target military and decision-making centers in Kiev and urged foreigners to leave the city.

It said it would launch “systematic attacks” in response to a drone attack last month on a student dormitory in the Russian-controlled Luhansk region that left 21 dead.

In a statement, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine said it carried out an attack near Starobilsk on the night of May 21-22, but claimed it hit a Russian military unit.
