Financial DISASTER for Hermannstadt » What relegation from the Superliga means

Relegation from the Superliga does not represent for those from Hermannstadt not only a failure from a sporting point of view, but also very large financial losses, given that the Sibiu club was in a very difficult situation anyway.

At the end of May, Sibiu City Hall adopted, from a second attempt, the Sports Agenda for the year 2026. This provides for the allocation of approximately 15 million lei to sports.

The main beneficiary should have been the Hermannstadt football team, for which the City Hall allocated 6.75 million lei, the equivalent of about 1.28 million euros.

However, the allocation of this amount was conditional on the team's participation in the first league, according to the local publication oradesibiu.ro.

Moreover, the name of the project submitted by the club gives a clear indication in this regard. Hermannstadt requested the money for “preparation and participation of the senior team in competitions organized by the Romanian Football Federation and the Professional Football League“, i.e. for the first league.

The Siberian club will also lose money from television rights, one of the most important sources of income. 1.65 million euros came in this route in 2025.

The relegation is thus expected to herald the start of an even more financially difficult period for the club which has been in insolvency since September 2021.

Major crisis at Hermannstadt

Recently, the situation in the dressing room of the Sibiu team has been extremely tense, and this is because of the financial problems the club is going through.

Concretely, the footballers have not received their salaries for months, and the grievances had turned into a real protest before the match with Petrolul (1-1).

Specifically, certain foreign players, including Antoni Ivanov and Jair, refused to travel to Ploiesti. The two even terminated their contracts and left the team in the middle of the fight to save from relegation.

Hope is given by a lawsuit won at FIFA

The only good news is related to the dispute won at FIFA against the Portuguese from Estrela Amadora, in the case of the transfer of Ianis Stoica.

Hermannstadt would collect approximately 1.3 million euros, money that could help improve the financial situation. Although there was a clear agreement between the parties, Estrela Amadora did not pay the first installment of the transfer, despite notifications from FC Hermannstadt.

After the verdict from FIFA, the Lusitanians are obliged to pay the outstanding amounts.
