Serbia is discussing the abolition of the visa-free regime with Russia

1 June 14:40
Discussions are underway in Belgrade regarding the possible abolition of the visa-free regime with Russia for joining the European Union, said the head of the Assembly Committee on Diaspora and Serbian Affairs in the region, Dragan Stanojevic.
“The issue of the visa regime with the Russian Federation is being discussed as a means of fulfilling these chapters and subchapters of Brussels’ requirements, which include the introduction of visas for Russian citizens. There are statements to do all this by the end of 2026,” Izvestia quoted him as saying.
At the same time, the politician expressed doubt that Belgrade would take such a step in the near future:
“I believe that we are far from joining the EU and from the abolition of the visa regime, because the authorities in Serbia still lacked only this for complete capitulation, which entails a worsening of the situation in Serbia and a critical loss of support among the population,” noted Dragan Stanojevic.
Let us remind you that Serbia submitted an application to join the European Union in 2009, and the country received the status of a candidate for accession in 2012. In October 2025, members of the European Parliament voted for a resolution according to which Serbia’s accession to the European Union is impossible without Belgrade joining sanctions against Russia.
