American political circles close to the movement of supporters of US President Donald Trump are looking for a high position in the United Nations (UN) for former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, which could provide him with “diplomatic immunity”. VSquare reported this on May 28 in its investigation, citing sources with extensive diplomatic contacts.
According to the publication, the area in which a former official could work at the UN is of secondary importance in this scenario, and the level of “immunity” depends on the level of the position.
Full “diplomatic immunity”, equivalent to the immunity of an ambassador, is enjoyed by the UN Secretary General, his deputies and assistants, as well as the heads of specialized agencies, writes VSquare. At the same time, lower-level officials have only “functional immunity” – that is, protection from prosecution for actions related to the performance of official duties.
One media source claims that, in addition to possible US support, Orban could also count on Argentine President Javier Miley. According to journalists, this may be important against the backdrop of the upcoming race for the post of UN Secretary General, among the contenders for which is the head of the IAEA, Rafael Grossi.
It also recently became known that the former Prime Minister of Hungary is planning a trip to the USA for the FIFA World Cup in the summer, and his daughter and son-in-law have already moved to New York. Interlocutors close to the ex-official do not exclude the possibility that if the political situation in Budapest worsens, he may remain in the United States for a long time.
Orban himself, answering questions from journalists about whether he fears persecution after the change of power in Hungary, said that he “abides by the law” and sees no reason for this.
