The reaction of the United States ambassador to NATO

The United States ambassador to NATO, Matthew Whitaker, reacted on Friday after the incident in which a drone used in the Russian attacks on Ukraine crashed on Romanian territory, hitting a block of flats in Galati.

In a message published on the X platform, Whitaker conveyed Washington's solidarity with Romania, a NATO ally, and strongly condemned the violation of the territorial space.

“We are with Romania, a NATO ally, and we condemn this reckless incursion into its territory”the ambassador wrote.

Matthew Whitake added that the United States stands with those injured in the drone explosion.

“Our thoughts are with the wounded in Galati. We will defend every centimeter of NATO territory,” Whitaker pointed out.

We remind you that, in an editorial with the title “Putin is cornered and attacking violently”, published by The Washington Post on Friday, the American publication places the incident in a larger context: an increasingly unpredictable Russian leader, increasing pressure on Europe and an extremely sensitive moment for the North Atlantic alliance.

“Given that Russian drones are attacking Romania, now is not the time for Washington to step up pressure on NATO allies”, write the cited source.

Foreign policy analyst Paul Goble, a former specialist in Soviet affairs within the CIA and the US State Department, claims, in an interview for the Kyiv Post, that the Russian drone incursion into Romania was not an accident, but an intentional action aimed at testing NATO unity and putting pressure on the Republic of Moldova.

NATO condemned Russia after the incident. Alliance officials say the response is likely to focus on strengthening the defenses of the eastern flank, improving drone interception capabilities and possibly consultations under Article 4, without reaching the activation of the collective defense clause provided for in Article 5, the AFP agency writes in an analysis.
