The interim Minister of Energy, Bogdan Ivan, said on Friday, May 29, that the operation represents “a huge step for Romania's economic security”with a direct impact on industry, agriculture and the labor market.
“Today, Romgaz takes a huge step for Romania's economic security: it buys Azomureș from the Swiss company Ameropa, for 69 million euros. It is a decision with a fantastic national stake, with a fundamental impact for Romanian industry, agriculture and farmers”Minister Bogdan Ivan sent on FB.
According to him, the acquisition process was initiated in the summer of 2025 and later entered the analysis and due diligence stage, with the support of a specialized consultant.
“In less than a year, we managed to complete a fundamental investment for Romania. Azomureș is not just a company, but an essential part of the Romanian fertilizer industry”Ivan also specified.
The official also emphasized the strategic role of integrating fertilizer production into the national energy chain, arguing that Romanian natural gas should be used for domestic production with added value.
“Romanian gas must be used for industry in Romania, for national production and for supporting Romanian farmers”, he added.
The purchase is made by Romgaz, one of the largest producers of natural gas in the country, which thus takes control of the Azomureș platform, the largest producer of chemical fertilizers in Romania.
The seller is the Swiss group Ameropa, which previously owned the Azomureș complex.
The authorities claim that the transaction will help strengthen the national industry and reduce dependence on fertilizer imports, in an economic and geopolitical context considered volatile.
“I thank the management of Romgaz for their seriousness, courage and professionalism. We went through almost 90% of this process together, patiently, responsibly and with the clear objective of defending Romania's economic interest. Today, this process gives results. Romania has resources. Romania has strong companies. Romania is rebuilding its strategic industry. In the volatile geopolitical context, this is the right direction: Romanian gas used in the country, national industry that produces at competitive prices, cheaper fertilizers for our farmers and strengthening Romania's economic position!”said Bogdan Ivan,
