It happens that every year the cherry blossoms fade, the branches promise a rich harvest, but after a few weeks there appears a carpet of green peas under the tree. Often, gardeners think that the weather or bees are to blame. But the real reason turns out to be different.
Cherries, sweet cherries and plums are stone fruit crops. To form a hard seed inside each berry, the tree needs calcium. And it is needed precisely in May-June, while the seed is just being laid.
How to feed cherries: solution recipe
For 10 liters of water take:
- 1 cup of construction chalk (or dolomite flour, if there is no chalk)
- 1 cup sifted wood ash
Mix everything thoroughly until it is evenly suspended. Use immediately, no need to insist.
Chalk provides the tree with calcium in an easily digestible form and deoxidizes the soil. Ash provides potassium: it is responsible for the sweetness of berries and the density of the pulp, and also further reduces acidity.
How to water correctly
“You cannot pour the solution onto dry soil. Dry soil does not allow liquid to pass through evenly, the solution goes to one place, and most of the tree trunk circle remains without calcium. Therefore, first I water the tree trunk circle generously with ordinary water. I wait until it is absorbed. And only then I pour out the solution with chalk and ash,” shares the author of the Zen channel “About Fazenda. Country Life” (12+).
An adult tree requires one or two buckets of solution per watering.
The first watering is needed immediately after the petals have fallen. At this moment, a seed begins to form inside the future berries, and the need for calcium increases sharply. The second watering is after ten to twelve days. This is enough for the tree to calmly go through the entire critical period.
After the first season, a difference was noticed: there were almost no green peas under the tree, the ovaries were held tightly, the branches bent under their weight. The harvest has become many times larger, the berries are larger and sweeter. Previously, the cherry seemed sour due to the variety, but in fact the tree simply did not receive the right nutrition at the right time.
