At the Novosibirsk Zoo, the polar bear cub Umka learned to swim. Footage of the baby’s first movements in the water was shared on the official Telegram channel of the institution, writes Om1 Novosibirsk.
The sixth cub of polar bears Kai and Gerda was born in December 2025. For a long time, the mother hid him from strangers and did not allow veterinarians to enter, so the sex of the baby was determined only in the spring of 2026 – he turned out to be a boy.
In April, the zoo announced a competition for the best name; Novosibirsk residents offered more than 500 options and chose Umka by a majority of votes. From Chukchi this name is translated as “adult male polar bear.”
