A kidney from a living relative was transplanted for the first time in the Krasnoyarsk regional hospital

The Krasnoyarsk Regional Clinical Hospital performed the first kidney transplantation from a related donor. The operation went without complications, and both the donor and the patient are doing well, the facility said.

The donor was a 43-year-old woman, the maternal sister of a 51-year-old man. Three years ago, he developed kidney failure due to diabetes mellitus, and he was forced to spend about 12 hours every week on hemodialysis. The sister decided to help.

“Regional transplantation started at the regional clinical hospital on March 5, 2014 with a cadaveric kidney transplant. In 2019, a lobe of the liver was successfully transplanted from a son to his mother, but the transplantation of a related kidney was carried out only now,” comments the region’s chief freelance transplantologist, Mikhail Firsov.

He explained that related transplantation has important advantages. This is an elective operation, so doctors can carefully prepare both the donor and recipient. The time from kidney removal to transplantation is minimal – both operations take place simultaneously in adjacent operating rooms. And better genetic matches between relatives directly affect organ survival: a year after a related transplant, rates are 15% higher, and after five years, 25% higher.

Krasnoyarsk specialists operated under the supervision of colleagues from the Moscow Shumakov Center. The donor has already been discharged from the hospital in satisfactory condition, the recipient is preparing for discharge in the coming days.
