The episode took place on Wednesday afternoon at a hotel complex in the popular holiday destination, according to Daily Mail Online.
The Romanian approached the child, then “hugged and kissed” him on the face.
The child's mother would have noticed the scene and immediately confronted the man, at which point he stopped.
Witnesses around the pool alerted the hotel staff, who requested the intervention of the local police in Calvia, the municipality that administers the Magaluf area.
The agents took statements from the parents and tourists present, after which they arrested the suspect on charges of sexual assault.
The Romanian spent the night in custody, and on Thursday afternoon he was escorted before a judge in Palma by two Civil Guard officers.
The hearing took place behind closed doors, and the authorities have not yet communicated whether the suspect has been released on bail or placed in pretrial detention.
The British family left the island shortly after the incident, but did not say whether they had cut short their holiday or had already booked their flight to the UK.
The case comes just weeks after another serious incident in Palma, where a young British tourist was kidnapped and sexually assaulted by a van driver. The woman managed to escape only thanks to the intervention of witnesses who observed the scene and photographed the registration number of the vehicle, information that helped the Spanish police quickly identify the suspect.
