Armed incident at a checkpoint at the White House where Trump was, the attacker was killed

A gunman who opened fire on a checkpoint at the White House was shot by law enforcement and died after being taken to a hospital late Saturday, the Secret Service said, according to Reuters.

The man approached the checkpoint at the intersection of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue near the White House, pulled a gun from his bag and began firing at officers, according to a Secret Service statement. The police returned fire and shot the suspect.

A bystander was hit by bullets, the statement said, but it was not specified how seriously he was injured.

Another Secret Service statement, cited by several news agencies, said it was unclear whether the bystander was hit when the gunman opened fire or during the ensuing exchange of fire.

The suspect was identified as an emotionally disturbed person, a law enforcement official told Reuters, adding that he had previously been issued a “restraining order.”

No law enforcement officers were injured, the Secret Service said, adding that President Donald Trump was at the White House during the incident.

The incident comes nearly a month after a gunman opened fire at the hotel where the White House Correspondents' Association dinner was being held, prompting the emergency evacuation of Trump and other officials.
