Negotiations between Iran and the US are gaining ground. The differences are “deep and wide,” says a Tehran official

The spokesman of the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ismail Bagaei, stated on Friday that “we cannot necessarily say that we have reached a point where the agreement is close” with the United States, in the context of speculations about a possible end to the war, informs EFE, taken over by Agerpres.

Ismail Bagaei made this statement referring to the arrival in Tehran of Pakistan's army chief Asir Munir, a mediator in the conflict between Washington and Iran, and confirmed that a delegation from Qatar is also in Tehran as part of the negotiation process.

Bagaei said that the differences with the US are “deep and broad” and therefore it is not possible to reach an outcome in a few weeks of negotiations.

Among the issues being negotiated with Washington, he mentioned ending the war on all fronts, including in Lebanon, the Strait of Hormuz and the US blockade of Iranian ships and ports.

The conditions imposed by Iran

Marshal Asir Munir arrived Friday afternoon in Tehran, where, since Wednesday, the Pakistani Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi is also in an attempt to bring the positions between the Islamic Republic and the US closer together.

Tehran is evaluating a new American proposal, Bagaei said on Thursday, claiming that several rounds of “message exchanges” had taken place in recent days.

According to Iranian media, Tehran has asked Washington to end the war on all fronts, including in Lebanon, lift sanctions, unfreeze Iranian assets, provide compensation for war damages and recognize its sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Friday that there had been “slight progress” in negotiations with Iran, but warned that a toll system cannot be established on an international sea route such as the Strait of Hormuz.
