On this day, the memory of Simon the Zealot, one of the disciples of Jesus Christ, is celebrated. According to legend, he preached in Judea, Egypt and Libya.
The day of remembrance of St. Simon in the folk calendar coincided with a more ancient holiday – the name day of Mother Raw Earth. Russian people looked at the earth with great reverence – as the nurse of all mankind. On her name day, she was treated with the utmost respect. The peasants did not take up either the plow or the harrow, and in no case did they drive stakes into the ground or dig holes, so as not to disturb its peace. But walking on the earth with bare feet was very welcome – they said that the earth could share its power with a person.
At the same time, Simon's day was considered in Rus' the best time for searching for treasures, as well as for collecting medicinal plants, including roots. In order for them to have the proper healing power, they must be collected skillfully – at a certain time, with the performance of various rituals. In particular, before going for herbs, a person had to wash thoroughly and put on clean underwear. And some especially valuable herbs were supposed to be plucked not even with clean hands, but through scarves and towels. In addition, it was necessary to ask Mother Raw Earth for a blessing.
Simon paid special attention to the brooms. There was a sign: if a fresh broom placed near a child’s crib quickly withered, then the child was at risk of illness. In this case, it was necessary to urgently take preventive measures. And a broom hanging on the ceiling could fall on that day on a person who came into the house with bad intentions.
