5 mistakes, and instead of a Japanese blade – a kitchen hatchet: that's why the knife is always dull

Even the most expensive and sharp knife will quickly become unusable if used and stored incorrectly. Expert Dmitry Zmievsky spoke about the most common mistakes when using kitchen knives – check if you make them too.

1. Instead of a magnetic holder, cover or separate section – a common tray for cutlery

If you store your knife not on a separate magnetic holder, but in a common tray along with spoons, forks and bottle openers, it will become dull almost instantly. Its blade will constantly touch the metal – due to frequent damage, it will deteriorate. Therefore, be sure to consider a separate storage space for knives.

2. Instead of hand washing, use a dishwasher

In the dishwasher, dishes and cutlery are washed at high temperatures and in aggressive chemicals – this is not at all beneficial to the sharpness of the knife. High humidity and shock also dull knives. Nothing better than hand washing for knives has yet been invented.

Important: you need to wash the knife immediately – do not leave it in the sink next to other dirty dishes.

3. Instead of a good plastic or wooden board – stone, ceramic or glass

Glass, ceramics and stone are not the best surfaces for knives. High-quality wooden and plastic boards suit them best, although they look simple and unrefined.

4. Instead of conventional cutting – universal use

If you use knives as a screwdriver or bottle opener or cut frozen foods, they will quickly become dull.

5. Instead of wiping dry, store wet

Have you washed your knife? Wipe it dry immediately, otherwise it will quickly show signs of corrosion.

And one more important piece of advice: if the knife cuts a little worse than usual, sharpen it right away. The more dull it is, the more difficult it will be for you to return its sharpness.
