During the first four months of 2026, Russian insurance companies analyzed road accidents and compiled a rating of the most accident-prone brands and models of vehicles. Regions with the largest number of accidents and their causes were also identified.
According to the T-Insurance company, from January to April 2026, Lada cars became the leader in the number of road accidents, the share of which was 19.4% of the total number of recorded accidents. In second place was the Kia brand with a share of 13.8%, and in third place was Hyundai with a share of 12.2%. The top five also included Toyota (11.9%) and Volkswagen (9.9%). It should be noted that this balance of power remains the same compared to last year, which may be due to the high share of these brands in the country’s vehicle fleet.
The VSK insurance house noted that in the first quarter of 2026, Lada cars also showed a high accident rate, amounting to 13% of all registered accidents. The next positions in the ranking were taken by the brands Toyota (11%) and Kia, Hyundai (7% each). The Absolute Insurance company singled out the Geely brand as the most dangerous, while Lada took only ninth place.
Statistics on compulsory motor liability insurance provided by the Soglasie company showed that the Mitsubishi, Opel and VAZ brands are the most dangerous. A year earlier, the leaders in the number of accidents were Chery, Geely and Haval. The insurance company Renaissance Insurance noted the correlation between the frequency of road accidents and the popularity of the brand, highlighting the Moskvich brand as the most accident-prone in its rating for January-April 2025/2026.
According to the T-Insurance company, among car models, the highest number of accidents was registered among new vehicles, especially those released in 2024, with a share of 7.8%. In 2025, older vehicles were the most frequently involved in accidents. Experts attribute this to the increased degree of self-confidence of drivers of new, technologically equipped cars.
Renaissance Insurance identified the Geely Emgrand, Kia K5 and Exeed LX models as the most accident-prone in the period from 2025 to 2026. The Soglasie company points to the Mitsubishi Lancer, Opel Astra and Lada Granta models as those that were most often involved in road accidents.
Traditionally, the largest number of road accidents is recorded in the largest regions of the country: Moscow and the Moscow region (26.9%), St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region (8.4%). The top five also includes the Krasnodar Territory (4.6%), Nizhny Novgorod Region (4%) and the Republic of Tatarstan (3.9%). The VSK insurance house confirmed the leading positions of Moscow and the Moscow region, adding the Novosibirsk region and the Republic of Tatarstan to the top five. The lowest frequency of road accidents was noted among residents of Perm, Irkutsk, Tomsk and the Leningrad region.
