NATO Foreign Ministers meet in Sweden after US announcements of reduced involvement in European security

The Foreign Ministers of the NATO states are meeting for two days in Sweden, in a context marked by discussions on the future of the involvement of the United States in European security, after the announcements of the administration of President Donald Trump regarding a possible gradual reduction of the American role within the Alliance.

The discussions focus in particular on how Washington will adjust its contribution to NATO in situations of crisis or conflict, but also the impact of these changes on the security balance in Europe, according to Euronews.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said before the meeting that the developments are anticipated by the allies, even if they will have important effects on the security architecture.

“This was to be expected. We know there will be adjustments, the US has to pivot, for example, to Asia”Rutte said in Brussels.

He emphasized, however, that the process will be gradual: “This will happen over time, in a structured way,” adding that “The US will remain involved in Europe”.

Discussions on armaments and support for Ukraine

Another focal point of the meeting is the defense capability of the Alliance, in the context in which the stockpiles of armaments have been affected by the military support given to Ukraine and by the recent conflicts, including in the Middle East.

Also on the agenda is the increase in the production of armaments in NATO member states, including for essential systems such as the Patriot anti-aircraft defense.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is due to attend the meeting, where he will discuss with allies the need to accelerate arms production within the Alliance and the division of responsibilities between Europe and the United States.

The summit also takes place amid tensions between Washington and Berlin, following President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw around 5,000 US troops from Germany, according to international media.

“This comes after conflicts with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz over the conflict between the US, Israel and Iran,” note the sources cited.

In parallel, the US administration has reportedly blocked the deployment of thousands of troops to Poland, fueling European concerns about the long-term commitment of the US in the region.

The agenda of the meeting also includes discussions regarding support for Ukraine, including the possibility of sending an official invitation to President Volodymyr Zelenskiy to participate in the upcoming NATO summit.

European officials warn that a reduction in US involvement could put further pressure on Europe's ability to militarily support Kiev, as ammunition consumption remains high.
