A new opinion poll shows what Romanians want regarding early elections. Most of them would opt for another solution

Four out of ten Romanians believe that the organization of early parliamentary elections would be the best solution for overcoming the current political crisis, while more than half prefer the formation of a new government based on the current parties in Parliament, according to the Informat.ro – INSCOP Research Barometer, conducted between May 11-14, 2026, writes Agerpres.

In the chapter “solutions for overcoming the political crisis”, 50.7% of respondents support the option of forming a new government, and 41.3% opt for early elections. About 8% did not provide an answer.

Support for the formation of a new government is higher among PSD, PNL and USR voters, people over 60, those with higher education and urban residents. Instead, early elections are preferred especially by AUR voters, men, people aged between 45 and 59 and employees in the private sector.

Regarding the direction of the future government, 65.6% of the respondents believe that Romania should maintain its pro-European and pro-Western path, while 26.2% are of the opinion that this direction should not be continued. The share of non-responses is 8.2%.

Support for the pro-European orientation is stronger among PSD, PNL and USR voters, people over 60, those with higher education and Bucharest residents. On the other hand, AUR voters and people with a low level of education have a higher degree of skepticism towards this direction, the barometer data also reveals.

PSD, PNL and USR voters do not want early elections

The director of INSCOP Research, Remus Ştefureac, stated that at this moment there is no critical majority in favor of early elections.

“The vast majority of PNL, PSD and USR voters oppose early elections, while AUR voters support early elections as a solution to the crisis. Two thirds of Romanians want the continuation of the pro-European / pro-Western direction, but a quarter of the population (26%) believes that the future Government should not continue the current pro-European / pro-Western direction. The percentage is significantly higher in the case AUR voters (42% who do not support the continuation of the pro-European/pro-Western direction compared to 49% who support the pro-European/pro-Western direction)”, explained Ştefureac.

He emphasized that the vast majority of PNL (95%), USR (89%) and PSD (74%) voters support the continuation of the pro-European / pro-Western direction.

“This percentage of 26% of the population skeptical of Romania's pro-Western direction is quite close to the percentage of 22% of Romanians who would support the idea of Romania leaving the European Union,” said Ştefureac.

He draws attention both to the risks of the constant anti-European narratives of Russian propaganda, taken over by some domestic political and influence vectors, and to the need to correct some structural problems related to the fact that the benefits of membership in the European Union have not been fairly distributed in the last 19 years. The eventual amplification of this trend due to radical populism risks becoming one of the country's most serious problems, the director of INSCOP Research said.
