The temporary solution to the political crisis, proposed by Kelemen Hunor. “After that we can fight again”

UDMR President Kelemen Hunor stated on Digi24 that the solution to the political crisis can be a temporary one, with a new government that will not remain in office until the parliamentary elections in 2028. On the other hand, Kelemen said that such a solution requires several steps that must be taken by the parliamentary parties and President Nicușor Dan.

“I think that by June 10-15 we can have a government to exist for 2-3 weeks at the beginning of July for an extraordinary session of the Parliament to pass the projects necessary to reach the milestones in the PNRR. After that, we can argue again,” said Kelemen Hunor.

The assumed risk of a failed first nomination

He said that after the first round of negotiations, it is not surprising that no solution to the current government crisis has emerged. On the other hand, the leader of the UDMR said that it is necessary to make the positions of the parties more flexible, which could occur after a first proposal for prime minister is made by Nicușor Dan, and the government formed later is most likely to be rejected by the vote of deputies and senators.

“Flexibility of the positions of the parties is needed at a certain moment, now it is not possible. If a first attempt does not pass the Parliament, things will show a different perspective”, estimated Kelemen.

“Without the AUR, we will end up restoring the coalition or a minority government, but with the support of the one that will remain in the opposition, PSD or PNL”, indicated the president of the UDMR, as two possible solutions, even if none of them has the guarantee that it will work until the next parliamentary elections.

Kelemen was skeptical of the possibility of a government led by a technocrat prime minister pointing out that he too must have the ability to coagulate a majority in Parliament to vote his cabinet and then the laws he needs to govern.

The technocrat prime minister could be a first proposal, but with the implicit risk of an unfavorable vote in Parliament.

“A person must be found who will accept the formation of a government, regardless of whether he is from one side or the other or from outside the parties, with the risk of failure, but you must make the first attempt. It would not be a catastrophic problem if we did not have the benchmarks from the PNRR, but in this situation it is not good”, believes the Union leader.

PSD and PNL, invited to make their positions more flexible

He said that a PSD minority government cannot stand, if it does not also have the support of the AUR, and one of the PNL and USR must take into account that the social democrats must not be put in the position of voting for the same prime minister that they removed through a no-confidence motion.

“Plus, even the PSD cannot dictate who the PNL will put as prime minister. This means that you have attacked the autonomy of a party. Both sides need a recalibration of their positions,” believes Kelemen.

Thus, a minority government should have at least minimal support in Parliament from the party of the former coalition that will remain in opposition, especially for achieving the milestones in the PNRR.

The UDMR leader claims that it would be a good situation, in which AUR would not remain the only important party in the opposition, which would collect the votes of all those dissatisfied with the rulers of a difficult period for Romania.

We should not think that we have to go together until 2028, but until March-April. If the coalition no longer works, another option can be considered

AUR, the red line of the UDMR: “Evil must not be trivialized”

Asked if there is a possibility of a PSD-UDMR minority government, Kelemen said briefly: “It doesn't exist. We don't want to, it's not possible.”

“We are on the side of the former coalition, brought down by PSD and AUR. Logically, I can't wake up with AUR. There is a red line, AUR. I can't cross it. If there was such a solution, it would mean that you are in the hands of those from AUR”, then explained the president of the Union.

He added that he understands Sorin Grindeanu regarding the PSD leader's opposition to the formation of a government alongside the AUR. “Some say that AUR should show what it can do, but I think that evil should not be trivialized, you quickly get used to evil,” said Kelemen Hunor.
