Iran threatens to open “new fronts” if the US resumes attacks

The Iranian army warned in a statement on Tuesday that it will open new fronts if the US resumes its attacks against Iran, suspended since the armistice entered into force on April 8, reports France Presse, taken over by Agerpres.

“If the enemy makes the mistake of falling into the Zionist trap again and committing a new aggression against our beloved Iran, we will open new fronts against it,” Iranian army spokesman Mohammad Akraminia was quoted as saying by the official Isna news agency.

Trump called off an attack

US President Donald Trump announced on Monday that he canceled at the last minute a new strike against Iran, which he said should have taken place on Tuesday, while assuring that there was a “very good chance” of reaching an agreement with Tehran.

He had never spoken about this attack plan before Monday and a message on his platform Truth Social in which he explained that he had abandoned this new offensive at the request of the leaders of Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates who, according to him, believe it is possible to reach an agreement.

Since the armistice came into effect on April 8, after almost 40 days of strikes, negotiations are underway in an attempt to reach an agreement, but the positions of the two sides remain very far apart, especially on the nuclear issue.

There was only one round of talks between US and Iranian representatives on April 11 in Islamabad, but that ended without any results.

Iranian diplomacy said on Monday morning that it had responded to the new US proposal aimed at breaking the diplomatic deadlock and ending the war in the Middle East in a lasting way. Tehran reiterated its demands, asking in particular the unfreezing of Iranian assets frozen abroad and the lifting of international sanctions that are suffocating its economy.

Donald Trump assessed on Monday that there are “very high chances” of reaching an agreement with Iran, saying that he observes a “very positive” development in the talks with Tehran, but without giving details about their content.

Trump also warned that the US is prepared at the same time to launch “an all-out and large-scale attack against Iran at any time if an acceptable agreement is not found” with Tehran.

The agreement in question would ensure that Iran will not acquire a nuclear weapon, wrote Donald Trump on his social network.

Tehran's warning

The head of Iran's armed forces, Ali Abdollahi, reacted by warning the United States and its allies against any further “strategic and miscalculations”.

The Iranian press had already denounced the “excessive conditions” imposed by the US in their latest offer. According to the Fars news agency, Washington is demanding that Iran keep a single nuclear facility in operation and transfer its stockpile of highly enriched uranium to the US.

Washington has even refused to unlock at least 25% of assets or pay compensation for the damages suffered by Iran during the war, according to the same source.
