Nicușor Dan, about arms exports to a sensitive area

“There is a political part, a commercial part, a military part and a humanitarian part. My answer is that Romania does a lot in the humanitarian area,” said President Nicușor Dan on Friday, when asked by Snoop about Romania's arms exports to Israel. Last year, these exports had a value of 78 million euros.
“You recently spoke about the lack of debate in society regarding the war in Ukraine. But there is no political debate regarding the war in Gaza, although Romania exports military goods to Israel, the value of which has increased in the last three years. What do you answer to the people who say that Romania supports a state accused internationally of war crimes and serious violations of human rights in Gaza?”, was the question asked by Snoop to the president, who was on an official visit to the Black Sea Defense, Aerospace and Security (BSDA), the largest defense exhibition in the region.
“There is a political part, a commercial part, a military part and a humanitarian part. My answer is that Romania does a lot in the humanitarian area, right now there is a discussion about the continuation of the evacuation of sick children and their treatment in Romania or in European hospitals”, answered Nicușor Dan.
He then continued, “All the time you have a contract going on, any contract has a bilateral obligation. When or if we end up in a different configuration, obviously the contract part will change as well.
Snoop published two investigations in which he revealed how Israel has become in recent years, since the Gaza war began, the main destination of Romania's military exports. Last year their total value was 78.3 million euros.
Snoop asked ANCEX and the responsible ministries if there have been reviews of military export licenses to Israel, to ensure that goods from Romania are not used to kill civilians in the Gaza Strip. The MAE only said that all licenses were rigorously analyzed, without providing further details about the conclusions of the evaluation reports and without specifying whether there were also cases of rejected licenses.
