From Yakov (Jacob), that is, from April 30 according to the old style, all matchmaking in Rus' was stopped, since the coming month of May was considered extremely unsuitable for marriage. Therefore, even a proposal for matchmaking was considered offensive: they would speak badly about the family that was thinking about getting married at that time. And the saying still survives: “Getting married in May means toiling all your life.”
On this day, it was not customary to set off on a long journey without first bathing in water from the March snow, specially reserved for such an occasion. The peasants believed that diseases were beginning to roam the earth for Jacob, and only March water could save him from them.
