The measure was adopted by the Decision of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine no. 589 of May 8, 2026, by which the list of targeted states was extended to 29 countries, including Romania, according to an official statement.

The Bucharest executive considers that this decision represents an important step in strengthening bilateral relations between the two states and reflects the positive evolution of the Romanian-Ukrainian political and diplomatic dialogue.

“This decision represents an important step in strengthening bilateral relations between Romania and Ukraine and reflects the positive evolution of the dialogue between the two states, as well as the joint commitment to support European values and strengthen ties between the citizens of the two countries”, it is stated in the Government's communique.

Through this decision, Romanian citizens will be able to acquire Ukrainian citizenship under simplified conditions, in the context of the new policy adopted by the Kiev authorities regarding dual citizenship.
