Petrea, former president of the Civil Section of the Giurgiu Tribunal, had announced his resignation in the context of the debates on magistrates' pensions and the tensions generated by the reforms discussed at the political level.
At the time, he declared that the judicial system had been turned into a “scapegoat” for Romania's economic problems.
“In this political game, of electoral capitalization, it went a little too far (…) a scapegoat was found. And that was too often justice. You find yourself to blame for the economic difficulty Romania is in. Well, forgive me: why me?”stated Alin Petrea in an interview given to Lumea Justitiei publication.
The decree regarding his release from the position of judge was signed by President Nicușor Dan on April 16, 2026. Later, Petrea worked for a period in law, through his own office.
