Dungaciu warns that the AUR will not vote for a government of which it is not part. “Things can't work like that in a normal democracy”

The first vice-president of the AUR, Dan Dungaciu, stated on Tuesday, May 12, that the formation will participate in the negotiations in Cotroceni, adding that the AUR does not “for now” seek the suspension of the president Nicușor Dan.

“This issue has not been raised and, in general, we do not want to enter into projects from which we cannot emerge as winners. And from this point of view, such an approach obviously does not depend only on AUR“, he said to Digi24.

He also added that “when we start (n.red – the suspension procedure), if we start this procedure, we will have to be convinced that the procedure is successful”.

Dan Dungaciu stated that discussions are taking place in the AUR regarding the position the party will adopt at the consultations in Cotroceni and stated that no decision has yet been made regarding the proposal of a prime minister.

“We have already announced this publicly, and it is not a secret. We said that if we were to assume the government, it would be around an AUR prime minister and around the government program that we outlined in general terms and made public. This is the only option we have.”

Dungaciu believes that the head of state “he has neither moral prerogatives, nor professional authority, nor legal authority to choose who is good and who is bad from what the Romanians choose”.

“It is not his job to make judgments between first-hand Romanians and second-hand Romanians in such a way as to say who can and cannot, who has the right and who does not have the right to govern. It is a problem that is solved in Parliament, because that is why there is legislation, it is not his purpose to judge them. I repeat, neither formally, nor even informally”.

Last but not least, he emphasized that AUR will not vote for any government of which it is not part.

“These discussions must at least exist, to maintain, so to speak, the air of constitutionality. They are normal in a democracy, even though the Presidency wants to convey the message that it does them only because it is, in one way or another, bound by the constitution.

Things cannot work like that in a normal democracy. Let's eliminate all possible variants. We do not vote for any government that we are not a part of”.

For his part, the leader of the AUR senators, Petrișor Peiu, stated that he categorically rejects the possibility of forming a minority government, arguing that such a formula is impossible from a political and parliamentary point of view.

“Minority government. There is no such thing as a minority government. To be a government, it must be sworn in, so it gathers at least 233 votes. Then it is no longer a minority, it has a majority that supports it. I don't think that anyone serious can raise the issue of a so-called minority government, which is a linguistic monstrosity, it doesn't exist.” said the leader of the AUR senators, according to Digi24.
